YOGYAKARTA: One of the country’s top universities, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), has granted Yogyakarta’s Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X an honorary doctoral degree for his role in building dialogue in society.
UGM Rector Sudjarwadi said that Sultan had played an important role in building bridges between communities.
Sultan also won praise for his humanitarian efforts in responding to a string of disasters that rocked the sultanate.
Sudjarwadi said that the Sultan had set an example in his disaster mitigation efforts when an earthquake struck Bantul regency in the southern part of Yogyakarta, and also during the eruption of Mount Merapi in the northern part of the province.
“Many countries in the world learned from the recovery of Bantul. This could stand as a monument for humanity and science,” he said as quoted by detik.com.
The Sultan said in his address that the key to Yogyakarta’s perseverance was its spiritual values. “The spiritual values embedded in local culture could help stave off the thinning of spiritualism,” he said.
